The Wildest Holiday Of The Year (Ivan Kupala)

Orlitsa Julia

Lyceum # 208, Kiev, Ukraine

Ivan Kupala is one of the most important and loved holidays of Ukrainian folk. It takes its beginning from pagan times as Day of Nature's Power and  is celebrated  at the night from the 6-th to 7-th of July.
People believed, that this night hides many mysteries and possibilities which are impossible at any other night. Popular believes  of our folk tell, that nature shows people its magic power this night-trees go from place to place, speak to each other rustling with their leaves, people begin understand language of animals and plants, which get  advisable power.
Kupala's night is very especial. People thought that all witches celebrated their holiday at that night. Essence of that holiday was making troubles for people. Also our  ancestors believed that witches made especial water, boiling river water with ash
of kupala's campfire. This water made witches flying.
All werewolves, mermaids (they are bad in our tells), hobgoblins,  aqueouses and wooden goblins awake at this night and make their own wild gathering. Witches dislike them and gather separately on the Lysaya (eng. bold) mountain. It is their favourite place in Kiev.
One of the most important attribute of kupala's fest is kupala's campfire. People gathered around it, sang songs, danced, played noisy and crazy games, jumped through it. By the way, wise people foretold human destinies seeing their jumps. People believed, that kupala's flame will protect them from evil spirits. That is why they took firebrands from kupala's campfire and kept them till new summer.
Main kupala's popular belief is blossoming of fern. Wide leaves begin to move about the middle night. Burning flower appears at the middle night. Invisible hand tears down it, human  can do it almost never. But if somebody will find and have it, he (or she) will become almost allmightly-will know all Nature's secrets, unkind masters and bad people will not trouble him, evil spirits will serve him.  Maybe you will try to find fern's flower? But remember: go home if you will take it and don't look back even if you hear somebody's calling you. otherwise evil spirits will take your soul forever.

New Year and Christmas

We liked the letters you sent us and now we want to tell you some words about our New Year and Christmas. We like these holidays most of all. We are more used to celebrate New Year than Christmas. This is the difference between CIS countries and the rest of the world.
Nowadays the young prefer to meet the New Year in a company of friends screaming, laughing, having fun. But our parents and grandparents consider this holiday a family one and they like to celebrate it at home. It is a tradition for them to decorate a New Year tree and to put presents for little children under it, to lay the table, to drink a toast to the New Year. Most of our parents watch TV programmes after 00.00 o'clock. Some of them go outside to see the relatives, friends. And we, young people, visit our friends, go to the disco or to the big New Year tree on the Central square and wait  for fireworks there. We usually don't sleep during that night. For everybody it's very important to feel love and care of close friends
and relatives. We wish the same to you!

Sukot
I am Luda. Our country is multinational. I am Jewish.
I decide to write a story about one holiday of Jewish people. This national is very responsible. It's people keep tradition. Here are four types of Jewish people. These four types are mentioned in the history of a holiday Sukot.
Sukot is the great holiday of great Jewish people. This holiday lasts for 7 days. The title of the holiday comes to us from word "suka" that means "the house made of branches". During the holiday people go out of their houses and send the time in suka.
The history of holiday. When the God had token out Jewish people from Egypt and lad them through the desert God had surrounded them with clouds and the people were saved from danger. So all Jewish were in one suka which was made of clouds. In memory about this miracle Jewish people every year during holiday Sukot move to suka.
During 8 days and evenings of Sukot and Shmini Atseret we eat only in suka.
In each 7 of days of the holiday Sukot (excluding Saturday) we take four kinds of plants: etrag, lulav, adas, arava and shake them.
Each kind of the plants symbolized 4 types of Jewish people.

Eid

It was Eid, and a beautifully fresh morning. It seemed as if everyone was getting busier and busier each year, and, of course Eid was getting boring. I was thinking of how the day would shape up and was passing my grandmother’s room. All of a sudden I heard her talking to someone but no one was with her. I hid behind the door. She was saying oh Baba ji ( we called our grandfather that, and she had also started referring to him as Baba ji) Why did you leave me? I get so lonely without you. Eid is getting so meaningless every year. All of a sudden I jumped into her room and shouted EID MUBARIK She smiled…… KHAIR MUBARIK. I gave her a big hug while she replied by saying live a very long life. I complained to her that Eid had become like any other day, when she started telling me how she used to spend it when she was my age. She told me that on Eid in their days no one was to work,or study. Everyone used to sit back and relax …… play, sing, dance all day long and have lots of fun with their family and friends. And all of a sudden tears came to her eyes, while she said " I dont know why it doesn’t happen anymore". I felt so sorry for her. I had to do something, so I called all the family and asked them to come to my grandmother’s house right away. While they were on their way I planned games, special songs we should dance to and sing. When they finally came we played games, danced and had loads of fun all day long. My granny was also having fun. We had a big feast. Everyone sat in the living room and started to say that we should do this every year. I ran up to my granny and asked her if she was happy now. She smiled and thanked me. She also said I know you did this all for me… Well I had to begin with but it became the most memorable Eid of my life and I will never forget it.

Eid

As my house was under construction, I was to spend my Eid holidays with my grandparents. I was thrilled. I wondered what we would do on Eid and kept waiting for it.
At last, Eid arrived. I wore a white and baby pink coloured suit. I invited all my friends and cousins to my granny’s house. I looked forward to seeing them. Half of my friends could not come because they were busy with their own family celebrations.
Some of my friends and cousins arrived. We played many games and enjoyed ourselves. When they left, I was exhausted so I went to my granny’s room.
My granny was crying and I heard my mother’s voice cheering her up. My grandmother cried because she remembered her parents and my grandfather. She said to my mother, “Your father and I were cousins. Whenever Eid arrived, we used to sit with our grandparents and hear stories about the whole year. Our grandparents never seemed to be bored or lonely especially on festivals”.
I felt so bad. The whole day had gone by and I had spent no time with her. I entered the room and sat close to her. She hugged and kissed me. We both started to talk like friends. She told me that the previous generation enjoyed Eid enormously. It was a day when families sat together and shared happy moments, but as the days are going by, people find it boring and other festivals are becoming more important to us than ‘Eid’. I hugged her again and we sat late into the night talking about the loveliness of the Eids in her younger days, and I saved up stories that I could share with my grandchildren.

Radavnitsa

According to this day people said: “On Radavnitsa we plough in the morning, cry in the afternoon, and dance in the evening.” It means that after Ester agricultural works were started in fields, that Radavnitsa was a day when it was necessary to visit our relatives’ tombs, that evening was time for fun. Radavnitsa was the common cause of the nation. All people in the village went to burial ground to honour died relatives’ memory. It was necessary to bring food and drink: cakes, kalaches, pancakes, cheesecakes, colored eggs, wine, beer and etc. It also was necessary to share food and drink with died relatives. That’s why people poured butter, wine and beer and rolled eggs on their relatives’ tombs.

Trinity-Semitic ceremony of ancient slaves.

Old Slavic culture and religion, ceremonies and customs of ancient slaves had agricultural character. A lot of holidays were connected with spring and so was Trinity-Semitic ceremony that was celebrated in the end of  spring.

The name of the holiday occured from the figure 7. It means that our ancestors celebrated this holiday for seven days. But in some areas of Belarus this holiday was celebrated for different period of time, that’s why this holiday had different names in different parts of Belarus. For example, the holiday of Trinity and Sacred Spirit, Green Games, Syomyha and other.

On these days early in the morning peasants cut down young trees, basically birches, and decorated houses with them. In some time peasants took these birches and passed round their fields. They believed that the birch was able to give its vegetable force to fields and cereals. At noon people gathered in the church, then went home and had holiday dinner, then visited each other. In the evening they gathered near water and made fairs, sang songs and told fortunes.

The holiday of worship to bears.

This day was celebrated on the sixth of April in Borisov region of Belarus. Many years ago there were large forests and huge meadows in this part of Belarus. A lot of wiled animals and bears lived there. Their strength and size frightened people. People tried to cajole them and made the holiday of worship to bears. On this day people cooked special meal: the first dish was with dried vegetables, because all bears like vegetables; the second course was kissel, because bears like oats; and at least, peas. After dinner all people went to have a rest, but they didn’t sleep. They tossed and turned as bears in the den. They did so approximately two hours. Legends say that it helped bears to wake up after winter hibernation. After that peasants did not work but celebrated this holiday. All people believed that on this day bears wake up after winter hibernation and went out from their dens, and people believed that they should meet bears in good spirits.
